Weatherup - Hendren Genealogy
My own Canadian family line began with John Weatherup and his wife Mary Hendren both of Glenavy Parish, Antrim Northern Ireland.
Over the coming weeks I plan to publish, where space permits, many of the Weatherup -Hendren family records I have accumulated during researching my novel 'Living in Hope'. I hope that visitors to this page will find them useful and I am only too happy to try to help you if you are a related family trying to trace out your own family tree. Feel free to contact me at admin@mayflowermaid.com if you are searching for any family history item in particular as I may have it!
The Weatherup name has been written in many different ways over time - even over one person's lifetime! My own ancestor John Weatherup was baptized as John Withropp- but on records confirmed as belonging to him he has also been called Witherop, Wetherhope, Withrup, Wetherip, Wetherop, Wetherup, Weatherup. So please bear this in mind when trying to search out your own 'Weatherups'. It is my firm belief that all of the Ontario Weatherups / Wetherup/ Witherups are a part of this same family and originated in Antrim. As with Weatherup- the name Hendren is also often spelt Hendron or Hendrin. I believe that all of the Hendrens settled at Peterborough in Dummer and then Lakefield in the mid 1800's are of the same family of John Weatherup's wife, Mary Hendren and her brother Thomas who came to Canada in 1832. Glenavy Weatherup Parish Records Births and Marriages
A report written in 1830's stated that as many as thirty people a year were leaving the Parish of Glenavy to emigrate to Canada. Why not visit http://www.glenavyhistory.com to find out more about Glenavy?

John and Mary settled at Dummer, Peterborough on their Crown Land Grant of 100 acres in 1832. Thomas Hendren and his wife Isabella ( John's sister) settled close by. In my new book 'Living in Hope' I write about John's service in the Royal Artillery in full detail, and how, as a soldiers wife, Mary went with him! It is a truly remarkable tale.
St Andrews - the Scots' Church in Woolwich where some Weatherup children were baptized.
For instance, how was Mary and her unborn child almost killed during a volcanic eruption ? ( I have John's military records and his discharge papers). And I write also about the family's tragedy at Woolwich. ( I have copies of all of the birth certificates for the Weatherup's children Eliza Jane, Thomas, Mary Ann and James#1 at Woolwich plus the birth and death records of their first son Thomas in addition to the Antrim births above). Then I write about what life was like back in Glenavy once the British had disbanded much of its army - including John. And then I describe how John and Mary and their families first settled in Canada and the struggles that ensued. (I have copies of his land grant papers).
Two of the Weatherup's children ( Thomas and Eliza Jane) from Dummer later married into the Haskell family and settled at Hope. ( I have copies of the marriage lines for both, plus John Weatherup's later marriage). Electa Haskell also appears in the novel. But why did Thomas Weatherup try to commit suicide? I have press cuttings for both this and Electa Haskell at over 100 years old reminiscing about her life. I also have a newspaper article about a ghost cited in the family home of George Hendren at Norwood !
How am I related to John Weatherup?
