A tour of the Mayflower Trail taking in the sites at Babworth,Scrooby Church and Manor, Austerfield and the magnificant Gainsborough Old Hall can be comfortably undertaken within one day.
However to visit Boston and the Guildhall, with the Pilgrim Fathers Memorials at Fishtoft and Immingham would require a second full day.
Both of these tours are impossible to do by public transport and so car or coach travel is essential.
Also many of the stops along the trail are only opened up to the public by appointment.
Where to stay in
There are numerous places to stay, to suit all pockets and tastes, around the Mayflower trail – too numerous to even start to do justice to. Instead, included here are just a few of the author’s own recommendations. All are within easy reach of Doncaster Robin Hood Airport and are on the Mayflower Trail ‘circuit’.
Between Scrooby and Retford on the Bawtry road is the romantic 17th century coaching inn, Ye Olde Bell, in the rural village of Barnby Moor. Family run, Ye Olde Bell Hotel & Restaurant offers the finest traditions of a fully refurbished country house hotel, complete with extensive gardens and comfy sofas beside traditional log fires. Personally, I love the food there!
Travelling towards Retford, nearby Bolham Manor is an elegant 19th century Manor House set in three acres beautiful gardens and grounds. It offers quality bed and breakfast accommodation and it is a must for those who yearn for the ‘homely touch’- and a welcoming pot of tea and luscious home-made cakes on their arrival.
In Retford town itself is the Best Western West Retford Hotel. Its two-hundred and fifty year old main hotel building is complemented by a choice of more modern style bedrooms and the emphasis is on traditional style combined with modern facilities- including free WiFi to all of their guests.
In Bawtry, across the border in Yorkshire, The Crown Hotel is another 17th century coaching inn and restaurant. This time however, instead of stepping inside to be greeted by an ‘olde worlde’ interior, guests are met by a surprisingly chic and highly contemporary environment.
Again in Bawtry is Bawtry Hall Christian Conference Centre offering excellent accommodation for Christian based groups visiting the area. The Hall is set in peaceful gardens with a genuinely spiritual feel about it.
Eastbourne House bed and breakfast is a friendly and comfortable guest house located in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire - just a few minutes walk from Gainsborough Old Hall, the town centre and Marshall's Yard retail and leisure facilities. All rooms are en suite or with private bathrooms. Free Internet access is available in all rooms to guests with their own wireless equipped devices.
